OSHA Fines Chicago Plant $118K For Violations

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited a Chicago plant with 22 violations that total more than $118,700 in fines.

After an inspection September 29, the company was cited for 22 violation, which included four repeat violations. According to OSHA, the inspection was a follow-up to a July 20 inspection where inspectors cited the company for for exposing workers to energized equipment by failing to implement and provide training on lockout/ tagout procedures.

Three repeat health violations involved failing to mark chemical containers with their contents and hazardous warning labels failing to provide emergency eyewash stations for employees working with corrosive chemicals. The fourth repeat violation was cited due to an obstructed emergency exit.

The company was also cited for nine serious safety violations and seven serious health violations in addition to another safety violation.

The Anaheim, Calif.-based Bridgford Foods Corp. plant is located in Chicago. As with all OSHA citations, the company has up to 15 business days from receiving the citations to comply, request an informal conference or contest the citations.

DeKalb Ironworker Falls To Death At Work

A DeKalb ironworker was killed Monday morning in a work-related accident.

According to reports, 52-year-old James Vaughn was only a few years away from retirement. Lake County’s coroner’s office said Vaughn died of multiple internal injuries after a fall. He was working on a addition on a Lake Zurich warehouse when the accident occurred.

He was on a platform hanging about 40 feet above the ground when the accident occurred. Vaughn was pronounced dead about 11:30 a.m.

Two Men Injured When Crane Topples

Two men were injured Monday morning when a lift-crane toppled over, hitting one of them.

According to reports, the incident occurred about 10 a.m. in the Washington Heights neighborhood when crews were working on the South Side bridge. The men were part of the crew.

The crane struck one man as it toppled and he was taken in serious-to-critical to a local hospital. The other man was taken in good condition to another hospital. Officials are investigating the incident.

ComEd Worker Suffers Severe Shock

A Commonwealth Edison employee was recovering from a severe shock Thursday in Northbrook.

According to ComEd, the employee was injured Thursday afternoon just before 2 p.m. and was taken to a local hospital.

According to reports, it is believed the man received a shock from an electrical panel on a wall near the train tracks.
