Metra To Expand “Quiet Cars” Program

Metra announced Friday it plans to expand it’s “quiet car” program to all of its lines, beginning June 6.

Metra tested the program, designed to offer cars without cell phone calls, loud conversations and music to passengers during rush hour times, on the Rock Island line from January through April of this year.

The cars will be marked with decals on the outside and signs on the inside of the affected cars.

The rules inside the cars mandate riders do not take cell phone calls unless absolutely neccessary, and if so, must quickly move to another car or make it very brief. It also discourages conversation between riders and asks that electronic devices be muted as well.

Quiet cars will apply to all inbound trains before 9 a.m. and all outbound trains leaving downtown between 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
