15 Deaths Confirmed From Tainted Cantaloupes

A listeria outbreak traced back to tainted cantaloupes has killed 15 people and infected 84.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said all of the illnesses began on or after July 31, 2011. According to statistics released by the CDC Friday, Illinois accounted for only one confirmed case of listeria from the cantaloupes and no deaths have been reported in the state.

On September 14, the Food and Drug Administration along with Jensen Farms in Colorado issued a recall of its Rocky Ford-brand cantaloupes.

The CDC said it can take up to two months between consuming contaiminated food and development of listeriosis.The outbreak has been confirmed in 19 states and has killed residents in 8 states.

The strain is unique because it can live in room-temperature food as well as refrigerated food.
