Chicago bicyclists may soon find themselves having to shelve their cell phones if a proposed ban passes the Chicago City Council.
A city alderman proposed a new ordinance which would prohibit bikers from using cell phones, PDAs or portable computers while they are riding their bikes. The proposed ordinance would be similar to a Chicago law prohibiting motorists from using handheld devices while operating a motor vehicle.
If the proposed ordinance would pass, violators would face a $50 fine. If the violation leads to a traffic accident, the fine would increase to $500.
Alderman Marge Laurino proposed the new ordinance and if passed, she says the ordinance would make the roads safer for everyone involved.
It has not been determined how the ordinance would be enforced if it is passed.
According to the City of Chicago Web site, the Windy City currently has 117 miles of on-street bike lanes and more than 30 miles of marked shared lanes. This includes the 18.5 mile path along the lake shore.
